The Daily Journal NJ

Medie · Nyheder · USA

On June 7, 1875, just 14 years after Charles K. Landis founded his community of Vineland, The Daily Journal was born. A part of local history almost from the beginning, it was the first daily newspaper issued in Vineland. The paper consisted of four pages with a yearly subscription rate of $2. W.E. Cansdell, a local printer, singer and actor once described as Vineland's William Randolph Hearst, published The Daily Journal from the office of another paper, the weekly Vineland Independent.

Just three months before Cansdell set up shop, the editor of the Independent, Uri Carruth, had been gunned down by Landis and later died. The Daily Journal cut its teeth on the 1876 murder trial and subsequent "temporary insanity" acquittal of Landis, which made headlines all over the Northeast.

The website began an era in which The Daily Journal could deliver stories as they unfolded, and publish far more photographs — and later, videos — than ever fit on printed news pages. Today, that 24/7 digital storytelling continues on social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter.
