How do you become a good elected representative?

The 2026 election is decided and the new municipal and regional councils have taken their seats. Across Sweden, new politicians have taken responsibility for budgets worth billions, for welfare services and for important decisions about the future. Many of them do it in their spare time, alongside a regular job.

During the theme period New in Politics, the editorial team explores what it really means to be a politician in a municipality or region. We write about the conditions, the challenges and the tough decisions, and we gather lessons from both new and experienced elected representatives. The theme is a natural follow-up to last autumn’s Election Special. That issue was about how the election result affects municipalities and regions. This one is about the people who will put it into practice.
